In February 2007, the State Government released a Discussion Paper that summarises research into the worldwide cruise sector and outlines opportunities for NSW destinations to capitalise on this lucrative tourism market.
The cruise sector generates many tourism opportunities for Sydney and the numerous regional ports along the beautiful NSW coastline.
The global cruise industry generates an estimated $18 billion a year in passenger expenditure and is the fastest growing sector of the travel industry.
It is important that our ports and coastal destinations are carefully managed and smartly promoted to ensure they are well placed to continue reaping the long-term economic benefits of this lucrative tourism market.
The research includes itinerary selection, the economic benefits of cruising, the trend towards superyachts, Sydney’s position as Australia’s premier cruise destination and opportunities for regional NSW destinations
Tourism NSW coordinated the research, which is the first of its ind in Australia, on behalf of the NSW Government. The partner government agencies include NSW Maritime Authority, Sydney Ports, NSW Department of Lands and the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.
